How fast are you guys getting your bikes to go? I have a hard time getting mine above 75-80.

Whoa........slow down!...........unless you want a blown engine..... Geezers are what they are - town bikes - not racing bikes. If you want more than 60-65MPH on a regular basis, you need a bigger, more powerful bike. :)

Water Warrior 2

Oh yeah, slow down a bit. The sweet spot for the GZ is 60-65 mph and it is happy with that speed. After that you will start to stress the engine and shorten it's life dramatically. Keep in mind that is on flat ground with no head wind.

May I suggest you could modify your GZ by converting to cash which could be used towards a Ninja 500?

i keep mine at around 55 - 60 even on the hwy. if people dont like it they can go around me, my bikes longivity is way more important to me than keeping it at WAO on the freeway so i can keep up. i have only gotten my bike up to that speed once, how do you do it?

That is the day the bike was feeling particularly frisky. Must have had a good nights sleep and fresh today gas.

When there is no wind my bike will hit 75 no problem. To get 80 I usually have to go downhill. The bike also performs better in cold weather. AS far as the life of the bike goes, I picked this bike up for $650 and I have been riding it for 2 yrs. It has already lasted long than I thought it would. The ninjas are nice but I am looking at Triumphs for the next bike and this one will go to the wife.

I don't really but I do know Lynda had her GZ loaded for touring and hit 80 mph on a straight stretch of flat road. I clocked her with my bike and then played with the GPS and calculator to get more accurate numbers because of speedo error on the bikes. 80 on a GZ is a rush but Lynda said it sounded about ready to genade.

which is a perfect reason to ruin it

I have never understood this mentality...just because something is cheap and/or has lasted longer than expected is not a good reason to tear it up...that is unless the reason you bought it is to test it out by pushing it to the max...but doesn't really sound like that is the case here. I like taking care of my stuff, even if its on its last leg, I can't stand doing anything to any of my items that could ever harm them or compromise them. My car has 209,000 miles on it and I still baby it....and it still runs just fine! lol

So far the best I've done is about 70 and that was full throttle.
It was pretty windy that day so maybe I will get to do better.
I rode on the back of my brother's Scooter the other day.
We got it up to 90. He said alone he had done 115.

Yeah...$9000+ for a new Honda Silverwing is just crazy to me.
My brother was lucky to find one up in Maine that was bought
by an old man that put just a few hundred miles on it before
he died. It was sitting in a garage and was traded in to a
Dealer by the son for something else. My brother got it
for about $4300 and it cost about $700 to ship here.

Go to a Honda Canada website and look at the prices. Mmm, maybe not, you might stroke out.

boo! hiss! I've never heard of a scooter that could outrun a motorcycle. How did the scooter get above 30? I thought scooters only had one gear?

Scooters have constant variable transmissions (CVT). It's a pulley that expands based on speed and load. Ingenious, relly.
I had a 150 that could do 70 mph and could pace most road bikes off the line. They start to loose "Umph" around 50 mph though.

Wow, didn't know that. Thanks for the information! I still don't like scooters though! :) haha

I'm really curious about that expanding pulley you are talking about....

The bell, on the right side of the drive, expands and causes the rear pulley to compress, which in turn enlarges the front pulley. Think of it like constantly changing sprocket sizes on both the front and the rear of your bike all the time. You start out with a little front sprocket and a large rear sprocket. But the faster you go, the larger the front sprocket gets and smaller the rear sprocket gets. It's a very smart invention.

Google for a Suzuki Burgman 650 scooter. You may be surprised. We have met folks on the West Coast who were riding a Burgy two up from New York state. Honda's Silver Wing scooter and the Burgman are just 2 of the larger scooters out there.

LOL, that made me laugh, thanks (not being a smartass at all). I know these aren't the fastest bikes out there, but I like mine. I took my bike on the interstate at hit 65, purring. I wanted to try 70, but I don't have a tach yet so I didn't want to chance it, just incase. I'd like to see a scooter do that! :)

Like I said, scooters that have license, insurance, and a licensed driver that can keep up with the speed, I don't have a problem with. But, in this area, none of that is true. I think I have seen one, MAYBE two, scooters in the past year that fit that criteria. I guess I just have a lot of bad experience with them. I also see tons of these things parking 5 feet from the door, I would get in a lot of trouble if I tried that with my gz...yet, we are both allowed on the road...and when the scooter is on the road, he can weave around cars, not follow road signs, and wines at 25 mph on a 40 mph road. http://www.tangiers.us/public/style_emoticons/default/kopkrab.gif

haha, thats why i get soo frustrated, they get all the advantages of not being licensed or insured, but also all the advantages of being licensed and insured, even though they aren't. I guess the main part that frustrated me is them taking my damn parking spot and not paying for it, lol.

Over here there are thousands of 50cc scooters. Mostly ridden by "children" who feel the need to show off, & try to pass everything on the road, without any thought for the dangers. They just don't seem to have the mental capability to apprehend these dangers. These are the ones who don't seem to have the accidents, but they sure see a lot.

LOL, i know exactly what you are talking about. when I am sitting at a stoplight and an idiot on a scooter decides to run down between the cars to get to the front of the line, i am SOOO tempted to open my door right as they are driving next to me and say "oops". Sure would teach them a lesson, but i know i would probably end up being the one in trouble somehow. i am also just waiting for one of them to misjudge their distance and smack someones side mirror.

A scooter can really get off the line quickly while you lose time on your motorcycle shifting.

Birdmove, Have you selected a bike for Hawaii yet? I've read of some of your choices they all sound good. I rented a Harley Fat Boy while in Hawaii, nice bike, but for me, way to much bike for there. I agree with you a 200cc to 250cc would be great. I had a DR 400cc and really liked it ,but that would be the largest bike I would consider in the Islands. Looking forward on you choice and move. Still deciding. We are hashing out an offer on the house we have to sell first. If the deal goes through it would close by about the third week in September. I'm planning on having two motorcycles-a dual sport and a street bike. Thye GZ250 is high on my list for a street bike. Large gas tank, good gas mileage, easy to work on,reliable, inexspensive--sounds like a good choice. For a dual spoirt, the Suzuki DR200, Yamaha XT250 and TW200, and the Honda crl230F are on my list.

My kymco super 8 150cc would beat my gz to 30mph as many times as you wanted to do it! It did take a bit to get from 55-60max. I get the same gas mileage on the gz so i like the gz better. The guy that bought my scoot was suprised how quick it was off the line. The silverwings are quick too, harleys hate to see the back end from a light.

Closing date on our house just got pushed up to the end of August. The inspection is Tuesday, so I'm stressed out about that. I had to give notice at my job that my last day will be Aug 20th. If we get through the inspection allright, then things are going to be happening fast after that.

Still very interested in the GZ250.
