Just purchased my '00 GZ250 yesterday. I'm actually sitting at the DMV waiting to get my new plates.

I wanted a bike I could work on myself, and use for hopping around town.

First things first I need to fit this bike to me. I need to find a seat for a taller guy, and what mods people have done to get a bit more comfort.

Next I need a bit more juice. I realize it's a smaller motor, but I need to be able to get to 60mph for about a 7 mile stretch so I can use it to get to work.

Lastly, I'd like to change the sound just a bit to get a little less whine and a little more depth. I know it's not a Hog, but there's gotta be some adjustment I can get there.

I'll be looking through the threads but any direction would be appreciated

Welcome to the forum from South Carolina. If you didn't already, I'd suggest you take the MSF BRC (Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course). It will help you develop good habits and get rid of bad ones. Ride safe.

i think about all you can do for power is jet the carb 1 stage higher. but as far as exhaust mods to get louder, all i have ever heard are bad stories, bike becomes abnoxious and slow. i jetted my carb and really there isnt a noticable gain in power from it. dude you bought the wrong bike if you want power and good sound, sowwy. here is my story, im a sportbike rider, but i ride my ex girls gz everwhere cause my bike is always broken. how do you tthink it feels to get off a literbike and onto a gz?! but you will get used to it, soon you wont want to push the bike and will be happy with it. i have a feeling you havent had the bike long enough for this to set in. give her a chance

The GZ is what it is. Certainly not a rocket by any stretch of the imagination but a solid reliable bike smaller bike with a good reputation from those who realize what it does best. Ridden within it's design parameters it will serve you well for a long time.

It should do 60 no prob with out any effing with it. 65 for that matter. Use fourth gear.

as already said, it should do 60 already. I live in southeast missouri and had to to to anna, IL to get the plate, registration, and all that done...and to take my test. I did 55-60 for a good portion of the 25 miles there and 25 miles back without problem. Yea, it whined a little, but nothing too bad at all. Heck, my girl rode the bike home from St.Louis, a 90 mile ride on the interstate going about 55-60 with little problem...just needed the cob webs blown out from sitting for awhile.

I agree too, that you will learn to like this bike a lot. I was a bit skeptical at first, but after riding it for a few weeks, I love this bike. Mine is a 2001, so not far from your bike. My last bike was a Honda Magna vf700c, it sounded a lot more badass and had a ton more power, but I really like the gz more, to be honest. I actually just found another one, a 2001 for a decent price that is in amazing condition and am thinking about picking it up as well...thats how much I like these bikes.

I've had my license for a few years, actually owned a Harley for a while, but had to sell it for of all things, a engagement ring for my wife. I work at a Harley dealership, so seeing guys riding in everyday I got a bit jealous and talked the wife into letting me spend about $2,000 total on bike and any mods.

While I'm not sure how it'll turn out I'm testing the 16 Sprocket idea, K&N air filter, exhaust, and a re-jetting. I understand the performance is limited, but if I can get that 60 MPH number I'll be happy. A throatier sound would be a plus.

I've already chopped most of the gear off, and posted it in the "flea market" (http://www.gz250bike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4531).

I'll be posting some pictures of the project as it goes, and give you some analysis of the mods, if the worked or didn't.
