View Full Version : Changing Sprockets - Throws Off Speedo/Odo. Readings?

A buddy of mine told me he's heard stories of people swaping out sprockets for better acceleration, but it ended up throwing off their speedometer and actually put more miles on their odometer.

Is this true? If the speedo/odometer sensors are located at one of the wheels, I believe they would read the same, but if they're inside the engine/tranny, they would probably read different....

Can anyone prove if this is false or true?

That shouldn't be the case. The speedo on most motorcycles is driven off the front wheel.So no matter what you do to the gearing,by changing the front countershaft sprocket,or the rear wheel sprocket (or both), would have any affect on the speedo drive at the front wheel.

I got one of my police officer neighbors to be a sport and tag me at various speeds through the parking lot at my apartment complex after the change. My speedometer was right on the money with what he clocked me at. I also rode around my complex (which i checked with my car to be exactly half a mile) and the odometer works right as well.

Birdmove said it best. It won't make any difference, as it has nothing to do with the speedo on this bike.

Yep the speedometer cable leads right to the front wheel hub area, the sprockets and gears wouldn't have anything to do with speedo/odo readings.

The only thing that might change your speedo is if you put a different sized tire on the front, as in thicker or thinner than the original, then it could have some effect.

Did you mean to say taller or shorter?


I've checked ours with radar on several occasions. One is dead on and the other is off buy about five mph. I got it used so the tier could have been changed to the wrong size. I recently put a new tire on the front of this bike so I should check it again. This one is the correct size for sure.
