Does the spring go in first and then the oil filter, or the oil filter first, and then the spring.

I opened the lid and both of them popped out and i don't know which way they came off.

did you notice the O rings. so here is the sequence

small o ring towards the open side on filter, filter, spring, big O ring, cover.

by the way nothing is silly here :)

did not see any o-rings, and in fact do not know what they are.

A o-ring is a type of gasket that usually fits in a groove. There should be two of them. One fits on the inside groove of the cover,The other is on the open of the filter.Check chapter 2-10 in the manual,as it shows the o-rings and filter and correct assembly order.

You can get new O-rings from Bike Bandit. They also sell the oil filters. They might be compressed or fused into the old filter or housing - which means you have to replace them anyway. You have to have them or you'll be leaking. Was there evidence of jerry-rigging? (Gasket goop or anything?) If you didn't have the rings, there should have been oil coming out at the seams.

They are two black rubber circular thingies, like donuts but then much thinner.

Sorry I didn't get back to anyone on this sooner. There are not donut shaped things in the well at all. Just a filter and a spring. Question is why? I guess I will have to buy some. .

They should be in there, you just don't know where or what to look for. They are to make a seal so you are not leaking oil and to keep the oil where it is supposed to go. View a parts fiche on RonAyers.com or in the service manual to see how this all fits together.

The oil filter cover will have the bigger O-ring squeezed into a grove on the inside surface of the cover.

well there is no leakage, but there is a little rattling sound when i start up and when i accellerate in first and second gear. Everything else seems ok though. I'll continue investigating
