View Full Version : Bogs down after replacing air filter

2003 Geezer with 7,700 miles. Only mod is the 16 tooth front sprocket.

Hi everyone, looking for some insight. I just replaced my stock air filter with a HiFlo HFA3503 and the bike bogs down on acceleration. The old filter was pretty shot and I am assuming that the new one has greatly increased the air flow. I tried adjusting the idle speed up a bit, seemed to help some but there is still a real problem. Ran quite well before the replacement. Carb could use a good cleaning and maybe with the increased air I am now seeing the carb limiting the fuel supply??

Probably a dumb question but the stock filter had a plastic cone that angled the air intake and the new one does not. I actually pulled the stock cone off to see if it would mount with the new filter but it does not. Am I missing something simple here?

Probably you have to re-jet the mani jet.

You need to adjust your Idle mixture.Your running a little lean because the new filter is less restrictive than the o.e.m.If you still have a bog after adjusting the idle mixture you will need to go up a couple of numbers on the main jet.A 126 or a 128 should do the trick.

Adjusting the idle mixture not the idle speed will make all the difference - you might use a little more petrol with the new filter and the adjusted mixture (probably a negligible amount) but the bike will run a hell of a lot smoother

Nah i never found out for sure but once when i getting a spare key cut the asked for the VIN number on the forks and what year it was and they couldn't find it in the system so it seems less and less likely as time goes on - that being said, i don't care if it's a hundred years old with a million miles on it as long as it keeps running the way it is!

JWR- I know what you mean...dont fix what aint broke. Good rule but I bought the 2003 bike with 7300 miles on her. Pretty sure it is the original air filter. Have to replace at some point and since I am new to riding, I have no idea how well it SHOULD run.

I will try adjusting the idle mixture first, read how to do it somewhere on this site. Thanks to all for the replies. Will post results for those interested.

Bike should idle & accelerate smooth without any misses or bogs.You will probably need to drill the factory cap off the idle mixture screw,if p.o. didn't do it.With the bike idling,slowly turn mixture screw out(rich)until the engine starts to run rough,than slowly turn in,to where the engine idles at it's smoothest.

My 2002 was traded with 15,000 miles, with the original filter. Always ran real good. You can blow out the filter to clean it.

I don't want to be a downer, but, any time you change AIR, or FUEL,
you need the right tools to put them together.

Guess work is just that.

About the 16 tooth sprocket...you have to pick the time and place for it to shine..
The original 15 will usually run wide open any time, but with the 16 you really have to play with the throttle all the time.

Yes, will have to drill the plug, its still intact. From what i can tell that will require a removal of the carb, correct?

Yes,that is the easiest way,only takes about 20 minutes.Removal of the tank or air box is not required.When you drill the plug,go slow,just barely through the plug,than you can pull it out by threading a screw into the cap.(A good starting point for the idle screw is 2 1/2 turns out.)
