View Full Version : Choke makes bike harder to turn over...?

Ok - I posted a more specific question about an issue I had starting my bike when it was cold, and have recharged my battery in hopes that solves the problem. But there is still something I don't quite understand....

When I was trying to start my bike the other morning when it was cold, I noticed that as I applied the choke, the bike struggle to turn over. If I backed off on the choke, it turned over more easily. But as I always understood it, the choke has to do with the air/fuel mixture, or increasing the amount of fuel into the cylinder - something like that.

So just why would that make it harder to turn over? This could seem like a dumb question, but hey - I come by it honest!

:retard:

Thanks all!

When you put your choke on it makes the mixture richer which fills the combustion chamber with more fuel that needs a good strong battery to bring the piston up past the compression stroke.Without the choke on there is less fuel in the combustion chamber, therefore easier for the battery to turn the engine over.Hope this makes sense as sometimes I have a hard time putting my thoughts into words.

Good answer.

A real choke would have a butterfly to close off air flow.

Your battery needs charging if that's all it takes to takes to slow down the starter turning over.

Blaine, that was a perfect answer. And I did end up charging my battery. Went out the next morning when it was cold again, and with the freshly charged battery and the choke on, bike fired right up.

Thanks all!
