Hope to head out and about to DV in a few hours. Went back and forth on postponing/cancelling considering the recent freakish heat wave, but, given that DV is pretty freakish anyway, and I won't get another chance to take a decent crack at it again until spring, I figured I'd go and if it really sucks, I'll just come back or go somewhere else. Not sure what sort of connectivity I'll find out there (I'll be content with gas and water), I suspect there are pockets of cell service. Got a solar iphone charger for my birthday to try out, if there's any cell towers.

I would imagine the Strat.

No, but that's not out of the question. (My GZ and Strat have about the same cruising range.) The Strat holds all my camping stuff and is more comfortable for the haul up the 15 to get there. But I'd be very happy cruising around the 2 laners all through DV on the Geezer. It's actually a better bike for it. I could pick it up if I dropped it, it's better on dirt, and, although I probably wouldn't be able to fix anything serious, I am much more comfortable with effing with its innards than anything on the Strat. The seat is probably it's biggest drawback, but, I've done 300 miles on it before. And it would totally suck on US 15, but I've done 60 miles on that with it as well.

Mr. Alan.
You might cosider NOT on the Interstate 15 in this time of the season, specially with GZ.
Why I say, you might know... ha ha ha
I wonder what/where your route would be??
As I remember that there are not many alternative routes to get in the Death Valley from the So. Cal area.
One from I 15 (from east) and the other from CA 395 (from west).
Aha, there is another one, throuth the Josuha NP and take I 40, I guess.
Have you tried CA 395 route, it may be less traffic and lower temperature ?

As long as I remember with last year's summer riding on the DV.
Your cell-phone might not work from inside DV at all... ha ha ha, but from sourounding small towns it worked.
Be prepared HOT really HOT temperature with alot of water/drinks.
Campsites would be empty except the upper north side of park, forgot the name. (but not sure in this time)

Safe riding and give us nice smiling photos when come back !!!

Made it to the Furnace Creek campground. It's hot but I got 5 bars on the E cell network. Drive up from Baker was pretty nice but my timing was a tad off and got here about 30 minutes after dark. You can see the Milky Way real good from here...
