What does it mean and how to prevent it from happening?

What does it mean and how to prevent it from happening?
It means that you somehow got liquid gasoline into the cylinder(s) of the engine and it is so rich that it won't fire.
It is ALMOST impossible to actually flood a modern engine......using anything close to "normal" starting proceedures. With a carb like the GZ, either something is broken or the operator did something REALLY dumb.
With a fuel injected engine, something has to be broken because there is nothing the driver can do to cause it.......except maybe pouring gas directly into the intake.
Why do you ask ??
If someone told you your engine was flooded, chances are good that they were wrong.......or something IS broken and needs to be fixed.
Theoretically, trying to start the engine with the choke fully closed/operated/on and continuing to crank it for a LONG time while it is not firing might do it......but with a modern carb, I think even that is a stretch.

Alternate definition: Flooding your bike: When you ride into water that's over the top of your handlebars.

How old do "unmodern" carbs need to be? I flooded my '93 Nighthawk once, flooded it good, doing exactly what your theory postulates. Overcranked with the choke closed. Silver lining - I know better now. :retard:

I think that's plenty new enough to have an enricher rather than a butterfly choke.......but I don't know for sure. That could be a pretty old design.
With a "real" choke, it was pretty easy to flood.
I didn't say I thought it was impossible with an enricher......just unlikely.
AND the previous sentence included .."either something is broken or the operator did something REALLY dumb. " :poke2:

OK, let's re-word my previous answer then.
That should NEVER happen unless you have the choke FULL ON when you are doing all that cranking without starting.......and maybe twisting the throttle too.
So, the answer then is: Don't leave the choke full ON more than a couple of seconds when cold.....and probably not on at all when the engine is warm or hot. After a couple of cranks (seconds) reduce the choke to 3/4 or half and try again. And when the choke IS in use, don't touch the throttle until the engine actually fires off.
Actually, I don't remember anybody here ever reporting that they needed full choke to start a GZ........unless it was sitting unused for a LONG time.......so maybe the best advice is: Don't ever use full choke; start out at about 3/4 when it's cold and then when it starts, slowly reduce the choke setting as needed to maintain an idle speed slightly above normal.
Regarding this: "Grow up burkbuilds. There is a place on this site for humor and this is not it!"
Why so touchy ?? You already had a "good" answer so what's the harm in a little levity ??

Light humor wasnt appreciated in that time of stress. Your GOOD answer came after my "gow up" comment not before. I appreciate it though.. You taught me something new..

I also belch loudly when drinking beer, and fart in bed.
Like one of your presidents said "If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen" :haha2:

Misplaced humor aside, several of us were seriously trying to help in your "time of stress".
Can we now expect a report on how things turned out.......or is the saga still ongoing ???
It only seems fair.

The GZ does use a "enricher" & my '73 GT750 also uses a enricher but my '81 Honda CB750C has the butterfly type choke.
