Hello all,
Just joined the forum and thought I'd say hi and introduce myself.
I've been riding since the 1980s and bought a 1998 GZ250 in 2008 after a ten year break from bikes (due to marriage). I went for the GZ due to their looks and fantastic, scooter-like fuel consumption. I was after a good commuter bike to get me to work and back, and the GZ250 fits the bill nicely.

Just wondering if any of you have had trouble with rust on the exhaust pipes near the engine. I've had this problem since I bought it.

Welcome.Rust on the pipes near the engine is common,most can be removed with 000 steel wool or sos pads.Than give pipes a good coat of wax. :2tup: :)

So, how much did it cost you? My mate in Perth says that everything is MUCH dearer in Oz. Over here a new one would cost the equivalent of around $4300AU.

$4300AU is about how much I paid for it 2nd hand. You're right, things are MUCH more expensive here in AUS, especially in Sydney. The bike had about 18000 km on the metre when I bought it. I've added another 13000 km since 2008.

Once it gets started, steel wool is about all that will help.....and even that is just temporary.

If you get to the point where it starts looking like the chrome is GONE, then stop the steel wool and start looking for new pipes. :cry:

If it really is just blue or gold dis-coloration and not real rust.......don't mess with it; that's normal.

AND no kind of wax or polish will last more than a minute or two up near the engine like that.
It gets VERY hot right there.

Hi Jess and welcome. The only rust I have in that area is the 4 screws that hold the exhaust flange on to the motor. All 4 screws are rust colored on the heads. I tried to clean them up a bit, with little success and now mostly just give them a light coat of oil after I wash the bike. I can still back them out and tighten them with no problem, so I don't worry about them. Very slight rust on the bottom side of the muffler, but again I think that is normal for a 2006 bike.The bike can't stay in showroom condition forever. I too use chrome polish and wax on the chrome on the bike, but like someone said before, that does get hot around there and the protection does come off. Hope you enjoy your GZ. Ride safe!! GZBrian
