Pulling the tank off will make it a simple R+R. Pulling the tank is also simple so don't fret about it.

Sounds good. Been a while since I had a GZ to look at up close an personal. Now that I think of it the cable is probably in more of a straight line when run below the tank or close to the bottom edge.

goes below the tank and above the head. too easy. the toggle/switch is more complicated to put back together

Backfireing is caused by bike running to lean from factory. It can be corrected by adjustment of idle jet.You probaly will have to drill out cap to get to it. :2tup:

Have we determined if his bike has any pipe or air filter mods ??
If it HAS then the fix might not be that easy.

Magnum: you aren't doing this testing with the air filter OFF, are you ??

In any case, a good does of Berryman's B12 might help.

ive run two tanks of b12 through it since i bought it 2 months ago. the choke cable was locked up, so i ordered a new one.........while riding the baffle pate in the muffler broke and fell out. but the bike was running fine even then, no back fire, just louder. didnt run any different. got the new choke cable, installed it. now she be back firing on de-acceleration. not severe but quite and few pops.... no air mods....

Your old choke cable was likely stuck on a little bit causing your bike to run a little richer.Try putting on a little choke and see if backfiring goes away.If it does than it is running lean,as I stated in my previous post.
