I'd be SOL with a palm tree!
That's just it, it looks like somebody's gonna' be SOL with just about anything interesting. Maybe we should start looking at it less as competition, and more as a team effort. Like instead of "Oh sh*t, Jerry beat me to it!", we should start thinking more like "Good, Jerry got that tough one, now we can try for the next one and see how fast somebody can get it.".
That attitude will be a lot easier since we now have a place to post the photos whether we were first or not.

I never did find a tombstone of someone born before 1800. I stopped at the Brainerd Mission Cemetery,(Chattanooga, jTennessee) which dates from 1817, but it was locked up and even if it wasn't I couldn't have gotten my bike near a tombstone. Then I went to the Confederate Cemetery on Lee Highway, unfortunately the soldiers originally buried there only had their graves marked with wooden markers which deteriorated and no records kept. However, there were 7-8 markers there with names and dates on either side of the mass grave tombstone. I'm not sure when those were placed, no information was posted, but I did find two privates, one dob 1825 and another dob 1818, so I snapped some photos. The tag-0-rama has already posted for this so, I thought I'd put my pics up here in case any US History buffs were interested. I snapped several plaques that tell a little information of both the Brainerd Mission and the Confederate Cemetery. By the way, I grew up in the area around this site named for the missionary who started that mission, David Brainerd, the area is called Brainerd and there's also an East Brainerd and a Brainerd High School. The Civil War Cemetery was the hang out of my local high school classmates who wanted to do a little drinking without much chance of being caught, it was kinda isolated in my day, now there's a Harley Davidson Dealership right next to it.

Well, I'm going to stop kicking myself now. The tag, as originally set up didn't turn out to be impossible after all, although it was a serious challenge. Apart from that, at least three of you got in some good riding, and turned up some very interesting material. Jerry, you get 1 million "Whose Line Is It Anyway" (WLIIA) points for tagging graves of two people born before 1800, and BB, you get 750,000 WLIIA points for all the interesting photos and associated history. If we ever meet someday, I'll tell you my authentic Civil War story, which is too long for here, but interesting oral history.
For those of you who may have missed the TV show "Whose Line Is It Anyway", my condolences, because it was a great show (the American version anyway). The point of the points was that they were totally pointless, useless, and without any known redeeming value whatsoever. It was a running joke on the show. Every time Drew Carey randomly and capriciously gave out points, he found a new and witty comparison for just how meaningless they were.
I must say I'm impressed with this group. We seem to be going the distance for this very cool "game", and not just sitting around yakking. I'll bet it's going to get to be more fun and interesting as time goes on, weather warms up, and more people get riding. Patrick, thank you for introducing this activity to us.

Just for historical interest, I was poking around the old cemetery in New Boston, NH this afternoon, and found a veteran of the American Revolution. Actually, I found 3, but the pictures of two didn't come out too well. I didn't think to bring my camera, so these are Blackberry pics. The ones of this grave did come out well enough, though. New Boston is about 15 miles from here, up in the hills, and is a very old village.

How many people, other than me and Dave, poke around cemeteries in their spare time? I think they're peaceful and secluded from "city" bustle. Picnics are good in cemeteries, where parks are usually crowded with kids and dogs and people, cemeteries are usually dead (pun intended).

I had to go to Lowes today and this shot just fell into my lap.
The Harley was already there, so I parked on this side, and planned to get someone in my photo when I got thru shopping.

Stopped by the Chattanooga Choo Choo Station this morning after breakfast and snapped a few shots of this old historic facility. Many of you probably remember the old song "Chattanooga Choo Choo" that the Glenn Miller Orchestra made famous, well, this is the place although I don't think there was ever a specific train named that. If you are "into" trains, then Chattanooga, Tennessee might be an interesting stop for you to make sometime. This station is located downtown and the old main building seen here is now a restaurant, and you can actually stay in the pullman cars overnight, it's part of the hotel complex. There's an outstanding model train display that the local Model RR association has here in one of the buildings that is built to pretty accurate detail of the local area including the trains. You can also visit the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum just a few miles away where many restored steam engines and old timey cars are on display, and they even offer a train ride that makes a round trip on their lines down to historic Chickamauga Georgia, where you can spend some time walking around downtown Chickamauga and see some historic Civil War sites and then ride the train back to the station in Chattanooga all on a fully restored steam engine powered train and cars.

Anyone with young boys (under 10) should know who Thomas the Tank Engine is. Well, there is a life-size Thomas that tours around the country giving rides. I took my son to Chattanooga a few years ago to ride Thomas. The train went backwards for 10 minutes and then forward for 10 minutes - not even a loop! But Adam was thrilled.

It's been over a week since the current tag was established. I can think of two reasons for this, and I'm wondering which it is, or possibly a combination of the two:
1) The tag is not realistic. I have no recollection of seeing any lion statues anywhere around here. I tried Google, and Google Images for about a half an hour the other day. There's a possibility in Tilton, NH, about 50 miles of superslab from here, but it's in a large park and I have no way of knowing if I could get the shot with my bike in it. Are others in the same boat? If so, can we modify the rules so that, if a tag just isn't realistic, it can be "reset" or changed somehow?
2) People have just lost interest in the game, and are finding other ways to enjoy their bikes now that riding season is in full swing.
Or, as I said, possibly a combination of the two factors. I'm just putting this out here because I'd like to see the game get going again.
GZ Jess
06-20-2010, 10:44 AM
I didn't really think the lions would be impossible but if anyone wants were would alter it to any stone animal that might be a little easier. Around here a lot of people have garden art that would suffice that requirement. I see concrete deer and other ornaments all the time.
Jessica
dhgeyer
06-20-2010, 11:10 AM
That's a very thoughtful gesture, Jess. I think there is some precedent for that, as I did the same thing myself with a tag that people were complaining about - an old grave a few months ago.
It'll be interesting to see if that helps. Frankly, I'm puzzled. Usually if a tag is a problem, people would have complained about it long before now. This is the first time that this much time has gone by and nobody has found the tag, but nobody has said anything about it either. So, I wonder if folks just got tired of it. I guess we'll see.
Weather's a little shaky around here today, but if I get a chance I'll go see if I can hunt up an animal statue someplace.

I was going to look for any concrete animal and see if I could get away with it BUT...........
Then the rains came. It's been raining almost every day here; that backs up the progress of the other things I need to do such that a good riding day is consumed but other "stuff".
Yesterday I took the whole day for riding (screw the other things); alas, I forgot what the tag was. Today it's supposed to rain again.
P.S. My little Honda got a trophy at one bike show.
To keep things in perspective, what that really means is that there were 6 metric bikes there that were "less remarkable" than mine.

Now that is funny Easy. Or you could also say your bike is in the top 14.3 %.
As for the tag, it is not impossible. I think folks are just busy and the tag search is a secondary thought while riding. Maybe give it a few more days and then the tag poster can modify the lion to make things a bit easier. Alantf is in the hunt but alas he can't quite git er dun.
Just thought of a location but I'm in the same situation as Alantf........sort of. Kinda hard to take a pic of a riderless bike going 90 Km/h on a bridge.
