Hi Everyone,
I just bought my first motorcycle, Not surprisingly (considering where this is being posted :P) it was a GZ250. A lovely red 2001. My partner and I learned to ride motorcycles last summer and I became hooked. Kept looking for a motorcycle to turn up at a good price and a Marauder won the race. I look forward to learning a lot and hopefully in time contributing to the forums.

welcome aboard mate, the GZ will teach you plenty, and this place is full of useful information.

Welcome, Alex! The pics I've seen of the red GZs are, indeed, lovely...although an orange color to go with your screen name would have been fun. :)

Thanks everyone! My bike is in the shop right now getting a spring clean and the carb cleaned (figured I would let the pro's handle it's first tune up). I am getting anxious to ride it again!

As your bike is already in the shop it should have a valve adjustment.Valves should be checked and or adjusted every 5000kms.

Thanks Blaine! Yep already got the vales checked. I went for the "check everything" program, so that I wouldn't have to worry about it for the rest of the riding season. Also this way I can keep better check on it for it's routine maintenance.

Depends. I have mechanical experience. My father and I have been restoring a '71 Volkswagen beetle for the last 4 years. So I feel I should be able to do the work. The only problem is finding the time for some of the bigger jobs it might need. I have just been awarded a grant to do research and get my Masters at University of Western Ontario, so life will be rather hectic from September onwards.

Well, apart from all the other good features of the bike you chose, there isn't any routine maintenance item that's very time consuming. And you can download a service manual right on this site!
