carb problem

Kr4i..I have a 2000 modle gz250.when mtr warms up and I ride abt 5 miles and come to a stop the idle is racing away but. Will slowly idle.down.wud appreciate any help solving this problem. I have heard sumthing abt shimming main.needle butdont know what this supposed to do or how to do it..I am 82 yrs old and still riding. My.first mtrcycle was 1948 harley 61.I can't hold up the heavy bikes now but gz250 gives me a good ride now for past 22000 miles IT is a fine lil thumper..Thanks again for any information.

The condition you described is most often caused by a vacume leak; carb boots, air box or line to the petcock. Could also be sticky throttle cables, I guess.

My first ride was on a Harley '74....about 1965.
It was only about 200 yards; scared the crap out of me !! :lol:

I think we are all in agreement, it sounds like a vacume leak. Glad to hear that at that young of an age you are still riding. Good luck with the repairs.

Thanks for the help.I checked for vacume leaks but no vac leak detected. This condition has been like this since I bought bike. Carb is clean inside. Cab anyone else think of another cause.

HOW did you check? A visual inspection is often not enough. Spraying some solvent......carb cleaner or WD40 or starting fluid about the boots and hoses to see if the engine speeds up is usually the best way.

If there really is NOT a vacume leak, then you need to look at the throttle cables and return spring. Your cables may be sticking or kinked and/or the spring is weak or missing. Could also be in the choke cable maybe.

Deposits inside the carb can do some strange things too. Some cleaner with the gas might be in order. If you can get it to where it idles fast all the time, then you just turn the idle speed down.

OK, and one last wild thought: If a previous owner messed with the idle mixture adjustment and the screw fell OUT........don't know what kind of effect that might have.

i think your choke cable is sticking. i had this problem on my gz, it would start out fine but once it warmed up it would rev really high, and some times it would idle really low and want to stall out. but most of the time the engine would just rev. the little plunger was not going in and out of the hole all the way so it was like riding with the choke wide open or partially wide open and bikes do not like that.

can anyone tell me how many turns out on the pilot screw/ jet on the carb i bought this bike and has idle issues i did clean it and changed a boot. plus when i took it out it was 8 turns out and i know that not right. can some one help me .... thank you biker friends

I found a couple of Quim's posts that state it was 1 5/8 turns out from factory. It might vary though. Are you using a new jet?

You need to start bike and let it warm up.Next you need to slowly turn screw out until engine starts to stumble,than slowly turn screw in until engine stumble,than out till engine idles best.About the middle of both extremes.You should start with screw out about 2 turns.Eight turns out bike is not getting enought air to run properly.

i did it at 2 turns out runs fine now thank you guys now i notice the head gasket leaking oil and i think thats has alot to do with the idle

Be careful with that. A LOT of us have been fooled by what looks like oil stains on the fins.
It may NOT be that at all. There is at least one (maybe two) threads about that on here. It could just be left over "shipping protector". Try to clean it off and if it is stuck on like concrete, that's probably what it is......and not a real oil leak.

And, a head gasket will not usually have any impact on how the engine actually runs.......unless it is REALLY bad.

I can also say i had the same problem with my GZ...fixed itself with Lubrication and it was fine
