New Tag: Rail Car: It can be any type, trolley, train, streetcar whatever as long as it rides on rails. I guess I could have made it tougher by saying, red caboose or something, but the idea is to give people a goal to get out and ride to and this leaves it a little more open. Have fun finding a rail car everybody.

Hey, I haven't given up in NH yet! There just weren't any roadside stands open this time of year. I was waiting for some Christmas tree stands to open up.

I did a 130 mile ride today. It was a mission for the Patriot Guard Riders, which I just joined recently. This was my first mission. It was the funeral of a Ranger killed in action in Afghanistan November 30. He came from a small town in Mass. It was 22 degrees this morning when three of us started the ride down. We escorted the procession, and formed flag lines at the service and the cemetery. It was awesome! The show of support really made a difference to a lot of people. And, despite it being cold everywhere in the region this morning, there were 63 bikes there! A couple came down from Maine to Sudbury, MA!

We're in for some really nasty weather for a week or so, but next time it's clear I'll be out at one of the local bonefarms, and looking for a new tag. Let's get this going indeed!

dhgeyer,

Thank you for serving in the Patriot Guard to honor our fallen military men and women. It's good to hear that you guys are willing to brave temps like these to honor them.

I was riding back to Atlanta from Chattanooga tonight, snowing, wind blowing in the 20-30 mph range at times and temps in the low to mid 20's and it wasn't exactly fun conditions to be out riding in.

Thanks.

DH, perhaps you would explain the Patriot Guard for those who do not know why they came into being. I do know but I think an American can explain it much better. The PG are a fine bunch showing their love for fellow Americans. Too many in the free world have given it all and it only takes a small group to dishonor them in a very tragic way.

dhgeyer
12-13-2010, 09:40 AM
WW,

I don't know that much about the history of the group, having just joined. Sue actually got more curious than I did, and I think actually knows more about them than I do! If anyone is really curious, I would suggest Googling Patriot Guard Riders. There is a history page and a mission statement page. There also tend to be state PGR groups, and they have varying degrees of web presence.

Basically the group was formed in 2005 in response to the Westboro Baptist Church, and its antics. I'm pretty sure everyone has heard of them, as they get a lot of press. They are the group that protest, and try to disrupt military funerals. They do this because they believe that God hates America, and the military in particular, due to the fact that our military tolerates gay people. The URL for their website is http://www.godhatesfags.com. And this is a church? All of the Baptist organizations have booted them, so they are totally unaffiliated. Bunch of nut jobs is what they are. But they did a lot of harm initially. Imagine having to bury a loved one who was killed in action, and watch these clowns parading around across the street!

A bunch of bikers, mostly vets, got together to do something about it. They got 3' by 5' flags, and started forming flag lines between the funerals and the WBC idiots: a human wall, basically. The group grew like wildfire. It has hundreds of thousands of members now. The mission has changed/expanded somewhat. In addition to funerals (which are only supported at the invitation of the families of the KIA), they support a number of veteran support/patriotic missions. Recently they escorted the "Wreaths Across America" project, and participated in the laying of the wreaths on the graves of veterans at Arlington National Cemetery, and simultaneously in cemeteries around the country. They also escort the buses that transport WWII vets to the airports for the Honor Flights to Washington to visit the memorials.

You don't have to be a vet to join. I was a conscientious objector during the Viet Nam War. I got the 1-O classification, volunteered, and worked for a hospital for two years. You don't have to even own or ride a bike. They don't care about your political stripe. All that is required is that you have respect, and a desire to support the men and women who serve, and their families.

The event I participated in Saturday was a special one, as 1st Lt. Scott F. Milley was a very well known, loved, and respected member of a rather small community. They had to hold the service at the high school, as there is no church in town that will accommodate the 1500 people who attended. Many who didn't attend the services lined the route from the school to the cemetery holding signs of support, or just flags. There were police from all over the state directing traffic. Most of them saluted us as we rode by. I was deeply, deeply moved by the entire experience.

It's no secret that motorcycle riders, and "Bikers" in particular kind of take it on the chin from a lot of people here. I can't imagine anything that we could do that would be more effective in changing people's minds and hearts than what the PGR do.

It's very easy to join. Go to their website and sign up. You will then begin to get notifications of upcoming missions by whatever method the state organization has set up. Here in NH it's a Google group and email list. I highly recommend this to anyone who rides, or for anyone who doesn't ride for that matter. The way this group has grown, there are many, many active members (including our state ride captain!) who do not ride and never have. If you can hold a flag and be respectful, that's all they ask.

I was gonna do the Tag for the cemetery one cause there's one down my street (it's the Riverside National Cemetery). Then I checked on the PGR website and found out there will be 5 rides to that cemetery this week (two on the 15th, two on the 16th, and one on the 17th) for veterans who've passed. I'm thinking about joining too, it's great that someone started up something like this.

Thank you for being part of such a good thing. My cousin was a Marine killed in Iraq in 2005. The patriot guard escorted his body from the funeral home to the church for the viewing. They were also there the next day for the service. I never got a chance to thank them for what they did, so I thank all PGR now that i can find. Is there a statute of limitations on this? Can I tag my own tag after, say, two months? I'm obviously not the most enthusiastic player of this, but I like that it provides an excellent excuse to waste time on the bike and I'm a little sad to see it being neglected. Are there no skip loaders, bucket or dump trucks elsewhere in the world? I can take a new picture next to a McDonalds or a Starbucks if that'll help.

You live on a volcano!

Yes, Mount Teide. From the rooftop of our apartment block it feels as though you could reach out & touch it, but it takes over an hour to get up through the zig zag road through the pine forests, to reach the cable car station that takes you to the summit. That's nearly as long as taking the coast road from one end of the island to the other. The road up the mountain has to zig zag, as it would be too steep to get straight up. Once you're at the cable car station you're looking DOWN at the clouds. A magnificent view. The problem is, that the holidaymakers who go on trips up there don't realise how cold it is at those altitudes. They stand there shivering in shorts & T shirts while the tour guides are wrapped up in parkas & gloves.

Maybe even a little "trick" photography. Park the motorcycle back from the dog and snap the picture making the dog appear larger than it really is. Or is that cheating? Oh well, just a thought to keep things rolling. :)

We also have so much further to drive!

And don't worry about the wages in US$ thing.... here in the US there are the signs that the our "quantatative easing" money printing program is going to inflate the prices everything here... "across the board"... possibly "Weimar Republic" style. :( (All the more reason to have 70MPG bike).

The ride was great. If I hadn't got such a late start I would have gone to Lillooet before turning back. The temp in Pemberton was wonderful for riding and only a bit cooler everywhere else. Somewhat overcast with a very few raindrops just South of Pemberton. Whistler had it's usual cluster of idiots but I managed to survive their antics and log a few faster stretches to see how the new seat felt going faster and doing some body english for weight transfer. So far so good.

There is no view of Mt. Baker at this school so I can only imagine it is referring to Burnaby Mountain which is just a few miles away (SFU is built on top). Had a good long run on the bike today getting these shots. Got the Port Kells substation on the way to work, and shot the school photo on the way home after picking up a b'day present for my daughter in North Van. Altogether spent about 4 hours on the bike. Rest assured, this video indicates that at least one cow exists on Tenerife, and a cute one at that (yes, the cow): :)

Yes, in Santa Cruz. It's designed (roughly) on the Sydney opera house. When they first opened it, they had to quickly shut it down for a couple of years, because lumps of concrete kept falling on the audience's head, in this new building that was already falling to bits. So much for Spanish workmen!

Apparently, almost no one has a bank around (didn't Alantf post that he has yet to see a bank appear in Tenerife? ) so I figured I'd put up something easier

12 C and I would be out riding. I doubt we will see those temps for a while now. We tend to hover around the freezing mark most of the winter. Thankfully I no longer live on the prairies where the temp could and would hover around -40 C for weeks on end. Brrr.
The trouble with taking a pic of a bank is most are difficult to park in front of and not get run down. Either that or the parking is taken already.

Even though the picture looks kinda blah, Oroville Dam is the highest dam in the US at 754 feet top to bottom. http://ludb.clui.org/ex/i/CA3019/ It's even taller than Hoover Dam (726ft!) Apparently there is enough material in Oroville Dam to create a 2 lane highway around the entire earth. Well, maybe after they find a way to make highways float, I suppose.

I tried my damndest yesterday to get myself in front of a retired military aircraft, but it just couldn't happen.

About 30 miles south of my location, there used to be a military scrap yard/museum for decommissioned aircraft. They had rocket propelled capsules, older helicopters, some larger Navy cargo planes... all kinds of stuff. So I set off on my adventure shortly after 5pm. Around 6:30, because I got lost twice and had to turn around several times to find this out-of-the-way road, I arrived at Mercer field, just South of Calhoun Georgia. From a great distance, I could see the windsock still blowing in the wind out on the old runway, so I was pretty stoked as I came around the bend, approaching the airfield. I imagined all of the amazing photos that I could get, with the mighty China-bike sitting juxtaposed in front of vintage aircraft in the setting sunlight. However, much to my disappointment, all that was left of the once bustling Mercer Airfield, was a hanger and a dead rattle snake...

http://i48.tinypic.com/8vrxtz.jpg

However, not one to go home empty handed, and wanting to be able to continue the Tag-o-Rama game, I did find a small collection of airplanes, that I think, for the purpose of the game, totally count. I was once at a place where military planes were shown, plus I got a photo with a plane... albeit kind of dinky.

Anyway, here comes the new tag:

New goal is find a buggy garage at a far off market. Well, not too far off or you might get home after dark and miss dinner.

Might mention I'm surprised that the pics showed up at all. I dropped the camera earlier and did some major damage. In the garbage now. Time to use my back up camera.

I'd go along with it if you had just taken the bike out to the local park and taken the same shot. I really didn't put that up to be serious just thought that single engine civil aviation planes die not qualify as "Military AircrafT Active or retired." I figured that if you let that slide as a substitute then I should be able to substitute toy trains for real. I did start my engine and ride around the block before taking the photo. Just trying to make a point. I think we should still be looking for military aircraft. I could have played off my tag weeks ago but wanted to give everyone else the opportunity.

I agree, just let it slide. Once I put up a milestone as a tag and said that any distance marker will do. Then, someone posted a 2 ft high concrete utility marker pole as the "tag found". No problem. Someone got out and found "it". Just consider, not everyone is blessed with the same mental capacities as you are. :2tup:

What is clearly against the rules, is that Water Warrior tells us to find a "buggy garage at a far off market" but does not include his picture of it.

Good thing there is a "tag-o-rama rules" thread... Skunkhome, please also read those rules, as to henceforth abide by them.
Here is the first part of the first rule:

1. Your bike or part of it must be visible in the frame along with your intended target.

So, WW please add the pic of your bike and the buggy garage.

All others, as long as no new tag has been posted, the old tag is still valid. In this case, a motorhome.

It just dawned on me that there are some giant, circular, concrete, tanks that the farmers use to collect the water that runs down the mountain. If I go out today (and remember to take my camera  ) I'll see if I can find one close to the road.

[attachment=0:1dcafr4y]view 3.jpg[/attachment:1dcafr4y]Wow.......Beautiful! I live around 4 or 5 kilometers from Puerto de la Cruz, and never ever heard of it. The zig zag that you can see running down the mountain is the old stone water channels that are a common sight, bringing the water down the mountain. Never knew we needed a pumping station, as everyone lives below the water table, so we get water by gravity. Dunno where they would pump it to.

EDIT:- Just taken another look at the photo. It shows the pumping station as being at Los Realejos - the next village along the road from us - The reason I've never seen it is that it appears to be down a track, among the houses, that, normally, no one would go down without a specific reason. I frequently go to Los Realejos, but never down to the sea.

The photo I've put here shows the view from our balcony. Los Releajos is just this side of the mountains you can see in the background.

Just a thought but I think we can include a dam site as a storage unit for water. A water tower my not be possible for some folks so we should widen the field a bit to include untreated water storage too.

Water Warrior 2
07-08-2012, 03:04 PM
Alantf, you may get water by gravity down the side of the mountains but I'm sure the pumping station is used to maintain adequate pressure throughout the entire system. At higher water demand times the pressure by gravity alone will drop to an unuseable level. At that time you need to increase the pressure by means of a pump and water storage reservoir. At night the reservoir is refilled when demand is lowest and the circle goes around the next day again.
That was my job for the last few years before retirement. Play with pumps, res levels and water demand for half a million folks with flush toilets. A major fire really gets iffy when the fire dept says we need more pressure and keep it coming. It was all a game but a serious one at times.

Yes, sorry I was not more clear in the tag, by "Water tower (Or pumping station, or equivalent)" I meant that a water tower, pumping station, or any municipal water storage, water transport, or municipal water pumping station would suffice. A dam would work as long as the water being dammed is used to water a city.

However, the water MUST be be used by the city, no pumps feeding lakes are permitted (probably uncommon for everybody outside of Michigan).

It's a 1969 Suzuki T250. This was the first year it was made, replacing the famous T20. It's a hand-me-down that's been in storage since the mid-80s. Several (many) years ago I tore it down to clean everything up and then it just sort of sat, as life took over.

I'm down to the rings and carbs. Then it's just new tires and I'm golden!

These things made 32hp @ 8,000RPM. It's a little street demon and I'm SO looking forward to the ride.
