Yeah, I found out that different states have very different rules about the antique plates. In Tennessee, you only have to buy them once and they are good "for life", but you aren't supposed to drive at night, or over a certain number of miles in a year and it's not supposed to be used as a daily driver. In Georgia, where I live, I was able to get them for my truck, it only had to be over 25 years old, and there are no restrictions. There are also no perks, other than the look of the license plate, you still have to renew each year just like any car and the fees are the same.

In England, the term "antique" is only applied to really old, inanimate, objects. Old cars are either "vintage" or "veteran", depending on their age. Every year there is a veteran car rally from London to Brighton, & it's really famous. I can't remember exactly which years veteran or vintage cover, but I know that it's an exact terminology, & the owners would be upset if you called their car by the wrong term.
So ............ What's the latest date you'd class as "antique"?

I'm not sure, and I might get corrected, but I think around here an antique car is one that's over 25 years old. Not consistent I know. I was always taught that an antique had to be over 100 years old, generally.
But then, in England, even a 900 pound 1800cc Goldwing is a "motorbike".

I'm okay with any "older" car you think will fit into the category, the object is to get out and ride not nit pick the rules.
Around my area of Georgia there's almost always a gathering of "restored" vehicles in some parking lot over the weekend, either Wal-Mart, or a Checkers Drive in or somewhere. If the weather is pretty, there will be a group of older car enthusiasts out there displaying their work.

According to their website and Wikipedia, Fedex is an international corporation with several divisions, and they ship worldwide. Wasn't Tom Hanks a Fedex employee in "Castaway"? Not really arguing about the tag, whatever anyone wants is fine with me. I'm just confused. I always thought Fedex was worldwide.

Never seen one in England/Europe. Most people use the Post Office (England), Correos (Spain). I suppose Fedex may exist, but I've never ever seen one of their trucks. I suppose I'd have to look in yellow pages, & if they did exist, I'd have to either take the package to their office or arrange for them to pick it up. :)

DHL, FEDEX, UPS don't normally have their own boxes in this neck of the woods. They do have outlets which are just a sideline in another business usually. So I would think any outlet would also qualify as a tag.

Easier to find a FedEX box than a Mail box......say what ??? :poke2:
I propose that your original thought was MUCH better; a postal drop box....since there is one in the background of your pic........and those should be present in most all countries, in one form or another.

Mail boxes are getting harder and harder to find, at least in my neck of the woods. In fact, the only mail box I could think of off the top of my head was the one at the post office. I just attributed it to Kennesaw being a smaller town outside of the big city. We used to have a mail box in my office park, but the post office removed it about 2 years ago.
In keeping with the goals of a) getting out and riding and b) keeping it fun, I'll accept any postal / delivery drop box.

These Cannons are from the US Civil War and are currently located on the South end of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee where a lot of very violent action was seen. Missionary Ridge was completely devoid of trees by the end of the battle, Confederate troops went so far as to cut them down and roll the trunks down the side of the ridge onto advancing Union forces.

Just in passing .......... What is a FedEx box? Is it like a mail box where you can leave packages for FedEx to collect & then deliver? If so, how do they make it possible to get different size packages in, without making the slot big enough for anyone to steal the contents of the box, & how do you know how much to pay, & how do you pay (stamps?) If you have to go to somewhere like a post office, why don't you leave the packages there, to be picked up? Most confusing to someone who had never heard of them until they appeared as a tag. :)

yes sir, it is just like a mail box, you drop you stuff in there, the fedex guy comes around and punches in a code and the box opens electronically, i was a fedex driver, i know the codes the the drop boxes, pretty cool how they work.
the fedex drop box is only for air mail, if you have ground you cant put your packages in there if you do it will take a few days longer cus the ground guy has to come to the air facility and pick up the ground package
if you have a big package you need to take it to the fedex location. some people were crazy enough to just set their packages on the ground next to the box and drive away,

Typically people will use the FedEx box for document sized envelopes, about 10" x 12" (roughly 25cm x 30cm). FedEx customers will have an account set up ahead of time. They will either use a hand-written label with their account number on it or they'll print out a label from their PC using FedEx software or FedEx online. Depending on how your account is set up, they'll charge your credit card or bill you at the end of the month.

there are also prepaid labels you can get from fedex and stick them on the packages. some people stick things in the drop boxes and dont have any account number or any thing like that on the package, if the courier misses that and processes the hand written air bill some times they get away with a free package lol.

Must be commissioned and in service, or formerly in service (retired). Must be owned by a fire department or fire company. I realize that these are usually behind closed doors. However, having been a volunteer fireman at one time, I can tell you that most firemen would be happy to pull a truck out for you if you ask. They tend to be very proud of their trucks, and generally friendly folk.

I thought we had come to an agreement that the less specific the better.
And while what you say is probably true of a Volunteer department.....about pulling a truck out.....I STRONGLY suspect that doing that just for a tag picture would frowned upon for any city owned department.
Now, just opening a door so you can SEE the engine might be a different story but I personally wouldn't be bothering them to do that either.
I DO think it is a good tag though. Shouldn't take too much riding around to find a station with the door open......or one that is "out" for some reason. If you live close to an airport, they usually have them too.....often yellow and often out in view.

Finding a fire station was pretty easy, I passed a LOT of them on my trip today, could have stopped at several, just decided to get one before I left, at one end of my journey and go for the school at the other end of my ride and since there was another station with the door open there I went ahead and snapped that shot too. Since there are fire stations in almost every community of any significant size I figured this tag would probably be gone by the time I got to Marietta, but to quote Gomer Pyle, "Surprise, surprise, surprise!" it was still here when I arrived. :)
By the way, what a great day to be out on the bike. It was upper 70's around here, sunny skies and a nice breeze blowing, sometimes blowing just a bit more than I'd prefer as I topped a few ridges, but overall, very pleasant. I saw a lot of folks out riding today, even saw a couple on a Goldwing pullling a trailer shaped like a Corvette, cruising down I-75, they were nice and waved to me, the Harley riders I waved to just ignored me, what the heck? Most of the Harley riders I see around are pretty rough looking people riding with the Outlaws Motorcycle gang, and even those guys usually wave as long as they aren't riding in a large group, but these middle age executive types who go out and buy Harley's just to ride only on almost perfect days like this one are usually to rude to acknowledge anybody not on another Harley, why, what is their attitude problem? :??:

Well, Easy, unless you hit a rainy spell, you should be okay. I think the really cold weather is pretty much over with in Georgia and Florida until Winter. I've put up my heavy winter riding jacket now and just carry my heated liner around to wear under my leather jacket in case it gets cold.
Typical June/July weather around here usually consists of 70's in the mornings, mid to upper 90's for afternoon highs, usually hits peak temperature sometime around 5PM, and most afternoons have a slight chance of a short lived but possibly heavy thunderstorm usually between 3-6PM. So, if I were you, I'd try to plan and leave early in the mornings and quit by about 3PM in the afternoon, that should give you the best shot at good riding temperatures and a lower chance of getting caught in a thunderstorm, and I've seen it fill up an empty one gallon paint bucket in 45 minutes before, you don't want to be caught in that no matter what rain gear you are wearing! Hope you have a great trip!

That's the beauty of not having a schedule.
If I get tired, I stop; if I decide to take a side trip, I go; if it rains, I find a car wash or gas station with a "roof" and wait it out.......or stop for the night.
I don't like riding in more than a light shower. Even if the temp. is 90......it's just icky....and after the rain stops and the sun comes back out......it feels like about 150 !!!

In chapter 11, "What's cooking? : Eating in America" he says "......... One of the more enduring myths of American eating is that diners were built out of old railway dining-cars. Hardly any were. They were just made to look that way............ Not commenting - just saying. :)
He also says - speaking of the earlier restaurants - "A single diner in a good location could make a profit of $12,000 a year - a lot of money in the 1920s"

This one is also in Fort Oglethorpe. The "Lake" comes from Lakeview, which is more of an "area" than any type of organized governmental structure. The Local High school was originally Lakeview High School, but when the City of Fort Oglethorpe took over the system about 30 years ago they built a new building and changed the name to Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School (LFO), but still the "Warriors" as the school mascot. Now the old High School is the current Middle School building.

I'm not sure if anybody really needs them Alan. I've always gotten a pretty good tan just working outside around here. I've actually heard that a lot of girls go to these things first, so they will "look good" when they go to the pool or the beach to lay out. Kinda defeats the purpose of laying out though doesn't it.
When I was about 14-15, the girl next door sure knew how to tan, and thankfully it didn't involve going inside where we couldn't "watch and learn" from her example! Sometimes I even went over and helped her by applying sun tan lotion! I sure learned a lot from that girl.

I'm so excited! I just went out riding around looking for concrete animals and hit the jackpot! Put 50 miles on the bike, too, but between the showers it's a beautiful day, and I didn't get nailed once. This lion is one of a pair in front of a 1907 mansion on North Main Street in Nashua, NH. They are in between bushes, up an inclined walkway and set of steps in front of the house, so the best approach was to get them from the side from the driveway. I cranked the 12x optical zoom out as far as it would go, and it came out OK. Here's a better pic of the lion:

I realize that there's nothing in this picture to indicate what this place is. If you want confirmation, see the following link. IF YOU ARE VERY EASILY OFFENDED, DON'T SEE THE FOLLOWING LINK. It's actually a chain/franchise. This one is in Bedford, NH. They don't advertise on the building because they want to keep a low profile in the community. It used to be Mark's Showplace, and they did have descriptive signs on the building, and by the road (Rt. 3), and it was always a point of controversy and contention in the town.

This "game" is strange. The easy ones seem to just sit there.......while the more obscure ones, like a tank farm and a strip club go quickly. The second one I can understand; some of the other ones, not so much. :)

I guess it all depends on where you live and what's around. I don't know of any tank farms anywhere around here. The closest one I know of is in Braintree or Quincy MA, and would involve riding through the greater Boston area. I did that on a bike once - never again! The strip club is maybe 10 miles from here at most, and has been there in one form or another for years. I've never been in it, but anyone who lives around here knows all about it. What I'm getting at is that some tags might seem obscure to some people but be easy for someone else, and vice-versa.

I even used the shadow of a few 18 wheelers for shade late in the afternoon while running I-75. I got home about 7:30 last night and drank fluids for about 4 more hours before I finally had to pee. Well, half an hour on the Internet and the best I can come up with is a houseboat rental place in Orwell, VT, 161 miles away. But Orwell isn't even on the water, so the boats must be over on Lake Champlain somewhere. I'd have to call and make arrangements. I guess I'll pass on this one. There's something down in the Charleston Navy Yard in the greater Boston area, but there's no way I'm riding my bike down there. My death wish isn't that strong.
From the limited research I did, it seems like the floating home phenomenon is pretty much limited to the Pacific Northwest and Florida in the USA, and the adjoining geographical area in Canada. And, supposedly, there's one in Tennessee somewhere.

Well, playing strictly by the rules, you are free to play your own tag after three days - tag another floating home and then something else. I think three days is reasonable. People have complained about a lot of tags as being impossible, and then someone gets them out of the blue. You never know.

There could be a leftover houseboat somewhere around Baltimore, but no floating homes, many Maryland counties have outlawed them, they're afraid the Chesapeake Bay will get polluted... Google Maps only gives me regular boats galore, in the marinas.

not bad Music Man. I'd say that a floating home is basically a small cottage that's built on a pontoon system or some other kind of floating foundation. They take up residence at a marina and pretty much stay put. They have no drive system and need to be towed around. Here's an example:
http://s3.postimage.org/lA6I9.jpg (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqlA6I9)
OTOH, a houseboat is basically an RV on pontoons with a fairly strong diesel engine to push it around a lake, usually rented. You'll see these pretty much anywhere there are large lakes attracting vacationers. Here's a good example:

Well, yes, that kind of was my point; somewhat defeats the purpose of having an excuse to ride.
Almost everybody who lives "in town" has one three blocks away.....or less.
Not a complaint; just a good natured rib. Maybe it will entice somebody new to join in.

Believe it or not, a person can be legally blind and still drive. This was true in Alberta a few years ago. I doubt that has changed to protect the innocent and give us a better chance of survival on the streets.

Bicycle riders are worse than motorcycle owners and foreign car owners with the outrageous price they will pay for "accessories". I thought I might get some simple accessories at a bike shop......like a simple cup holder. HOLY SMOKE: $35.
I now shop for stuff like that at WalMart and Target.

I found the bike shop in Atlanta near the East/West Connector,
Well, rats, can't seem to get the pictures to upload from here. I've got "ify" internet service here in Atlanta, gotta see about finding another service.
Sorry, guys, guess somebody else will have to get this one.

Man, I hate when that happens. Posting photos to this forum in the normal way from my Blackberry doesn't work at all. I guess the Javascript runtime on the BB can't handle the code. I have to upload a photo to another website, then link to this site. Not worth it generally.

My problem is the particular internet connection I'm using, nothing to do with this site. Maybe I have found a solution, although it's gonna cost me $40 a month for broadband service, but I've got to have a connection I can depend on now that my Fall classes have started back at college. Hopefully the little "modem" will get here in the next couple of days and I'll be able to get online without any more glitches. I'll try to upload again now from the existing connection and see if it works.

Hey, I think I got it. This bike shop is in Atlanta, just north of I-285 on the East West Connector Road.
If this one will load, it's a Greek House, you know college kids in togas and such. Not sure if this one is a Fraternity or a Sorority, so either will do, just find a local campus, and there should be a Grk House nearby.
http://s4.postimage.org/wT1wA.jpg (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVwT1wA)
I caught the bike shop on the way from work to class in the afternoon, and the Grk house after classes on my way home, thus the daylight, night shots, sorry I don't know how to turn off the flash and I couldn't see well enough in the dark to figure it out.

I hope Easy didn't actually go for this one. I just felt like riding the GZ this morning. It isn't getting the miles it should lately, and most of what it gets is around town. Durham is fifty miles away. Thirty miles on the superslab each way. That's about all the superslab I'd want to do on the GZ250. I had a tailwind going out, and, of course, a headwind coming back. On the way back I had to keep it in 4th to even maintain 60 on the uphill sections.

I see lots of vanity plates, unfortunately, they are usually on moving vehicles or I don't have my camera with me at the moment. My mom has vanity plates, but I don't think she really understands the concept, she just ordered one with a random set of letters and numbers on it.

In England there are plenty, but in Spain they're not allowed. You just get what you're given. Anyway, I don't reckon you could make much out of 4 numbers, then 3 letters. The first letter gives the year of registration, & the plates stay with the vehicle for life. :)

Re: mom's random number vanity plates. Okay, they aren't exactly random and there is somewhat of a meaning behind it, but it's random to almost anyone who doesn't
know mom really well. A few years ago my dad got plates with Junior Sample's (from He-Haw) phone number, (BR549). Well, mom decided that she liked that and two
of her initials had a B and an R in her name, so she added the initial from her maiden name and ordered a plate that bears the designation, BRW549. So I do get it ER,
but it's a long stretch for an explanation to anyone, and it does just look like random letters and numbers to the casual observer.

I have to admit, I think vanity plates that are too much of a puzzle are pointless.
It's raining like hell, here. Otherwise, I'd be out there scouting for plates. Maybe tomorrow.
