ok, so here goes. Went out in the steel cage today with the family, brilliant sunshine when i left. Left the bike on the path out the front of the house, thinking that this wonderful day couldn't get much better. Hell, even had the sunroof of the 4wd open. Fast forward about two hours, and Melbourne cops a massive storm. Flooded roads, destroyed gardens, thankful I'm in the 4wd and not a car. Get back home to find the GZ still sitting upright, no damage from the hail (bout the same size hailstones as the top bit of your thumb) but this black tube just hanging out from the bottom of the carb. Start her up fine, sounds as good as she did yesterday when i took her for a run, thou the black tube is just hanging there. Pull out the service manual (thanks guys!) and this is the only reference i could find to it.

is the image from the manual.

highlighted in red is the tube i'm talking about.
am i right on this one or is it something else? Help?

That's what it is. It runs to the bottom of the frame and points down to drain water, oil and gas out of the float bowl. Perfectly normal to be open to the ground, but I used a zip tie and kept it from laying directly on the engine (but still pointed down)...not that it will ever get hot enough to melt it, I just like it looking clean.

All carbureted bikes have them, but most are hidden better.

Here's a picture of mine (if you are checking to make sure you have it hooked up right. You do.)

You beat me to the pic, Alan. If mine wasn't against a wall on stands right now, I'd have snagged one.

Really, from the hail? Or was your seat somewhat thrashed already...? Rain really shouldn't hurt the bike at all. I could see hail nicking up the paint though. My Dad's Vista Cruiser got nailed in Wyoming back in 1970 with golf ball sized hail (with six kids in the car!) scared the shit out of us and dinged up the tint on the moonroof. It's like raining rocks!

seat was originally in excellent condition, no rips, tears, nicks, not even rough spots. My neighbors car had the windshield smashed, and looks like someone has taken to every panel with a hammer.

shows a few pics from round Melbourne. Rain shouldn't hurt the bike, but when your talking about rocks of ice being thrown from the sky, I'd say i got off easy with just the seat ruined, no dents on the tank or elsewhere on the bike.

We've just got over cyclone Xynthia. If they name them A-Z, then Xynthia is number 24. Can't say I noticed the other 23. :??:

just got back from pulling a mates car outta a river that was once a street here in Melbourne, so very glad that I have a 4wd. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets worse again over night...Thankfully nothing of the same level of the cyclone there mate. Lived through one or two of those when was living up north in Queensland, can't say enjoyed them much.

[quote="Fish Baseball"]ok, this black tube just hanging out from the bottom of the carb.

the hose if fine hanging down, there is a spot that the house should be hanging down to tho. the hose should have a cap on the end, if i remember right the bike will not run as well if that hose is not pluged up, you just pull the cap off every month or so and drain out all the junk, if any.

if you dont have a plug for it you should get one. i cant remember why it needs to be plugged but it does.

well Melbourne is about to be hit again with some pretty severe weather, so i won't be testing it today.....the service manual mentions no plug, but experience tells me there is only so much information one can garner from this anyway....have to wait till Monday at the earliest to find out.

You are hosed!

Wrong hose. The one from the bottom of the carb does NOT have a plug.
The one from the bottom of the AIR BOX does need a plug.

:plus1:

The airbox is meant for draining every so often and can cause some possible performance issues if it isn't plugged. The carb hose, however, should not have a plug. Fish, this hose is not a problem for you.

Yes, thankfully. These pictures that somebody e-mailed to me were taken about 30 miles away. Luckily, in our village, we caught the tail end. It still caused a lot of damage, but it was mainly caused by the high winds. The rain was SLIGHTLY less than in the photos, & luckily our barrancos (dried up river beds) were able to handle a lot of it this time. They're still clearing up from the water damage we got during the last cyclone, earlier in the year. That time we got water like in the pictures.

Just realised!..... The cyclone would be called "Cynthia", i.e. the third cyclone this year, not the twenty third. The spelling "Xynthia" that they use over here is the Spanish version, so that the pronunciation stays the same. :bang:

Bump. lol I was washing my bike today and noticed this overflow tube was disconnected. I had no idea it was suppose to just dangle there and was kind of worried.

Thankfully, I found the answer on this thread :D

I was taking the cover off my bike this afternoon to go for a ride and felt this hose hanging there. Didn't want to go for the ride until I figured out if it was a disconnected hose. After reading this post I now know it's fine. The only thing that bothers me now is that it took me this long to notice it. I inspect the bike before every ride, but this tells me I don't look as well as I thought.... O_o

Thanks again!
