View Full Version : More rain in Atlanta, I'm gonna need a jet ski!

I think Atlanta's average rainfall amount is around 50", the last time I heard we were over by 10" and it has been raining hard again since about this time last night without

letting up. Maybe I should have gotten a jet ski instead of a motorcycle O_o Oh well, been riding in it anyway, I just take a little more time and give myself more room to

brake and take the turns slower and more upright than usual. At times like these, good rain gear is worth the price but I'm ready for a nice warm, dry day!

Didn't you guys run out of water last year? Perhaps it's just evening out.

Almost....and we can hope. (My daughter lives there.)

Some of those "wacco scientists" that claim there is a global climate change taking place also said that the first and probably most noticeable effect will be MUCH wider than normal local climate swings: less rain than normal, then more rain than normal; colder than normal, then hotter. That is looking to be true here; last year was HOT and relatively dry; this year cool and very much wetter than normal.

Back as far as Mark Twain's day he said " if you don't like the weather here, wait around, it will change." Seems like everybody from Fundamentalist Christians to Global warming scientists tend to go all "end of the world" every time the weather weather changes! Well guess what, there's nothing new about that! That's what weather does, it changes, it is unpredictable (or the local weather guys would be right more often) and yet every time ANY weather extreme happens people start harping on stuff like "it's global warming" that's causing (Hurricanes, lack of hurricanes, flooding, drought, hot weather, cold weather, snow, lack of snow). I've been hearing this crap all of my life, in the 70's the Scientists stated emphatically that we were heading into an Ice age and we were all going to freeze to death, then in the 80's the Ozone layer was going away and we were all going to die of skin cancer,(better wear SPF 2000) then it became "global warming" and we are all going to burn up and die! I'm sick of having these morons manipulate the public into giving them control and billions of dollars by scaring everybody to death with all these extremist "facts" that seem to contradict themselves about every decade or so. When are we going to wake up and realize that this is all bullshit? Weather changes, we adapt, that's why we are around and many other species are not. I don't know about you but I'd love to see the average global temperature go up a few degrees! Russia wouldn't have to start any more wars to get a Winter port that wasn't frozen in, and all those Northern countries would have a longer growing season and we could all ride our bikes in comfort more of the year! If you really think the ocean is going to rise significantly, go buy some real estate that's currently about 5' higher than the stuff down by the beach now, you'll get filthy rich selling ocean front property in a few years!

I just KNEW I shouldn't have mentioned that.

I'm sorry but I can't agree with you......not this time.
The evidence is mounting daily and is becoming overwhelming.
It is not just a few "morons" that are concerned.

Not worth you and I fighting about it because we can't really do anything one way or the other. Time will tell. I hope it ends up that you are right but I fear that you won't be.

I rest my case.

I come to the Atlanta area about 3-4 times a year; sometimes on my bike.
I had really hoped we could get together for coffee or a short ride sometime.......
BUT........
If you insist on using THIS forum to promote a political or religious agenda.......well, then I guess it ain't gonna happen.

And if we do happen to meet and you start that up in person, it will be a REAL short meeting.

SIGH!

burkbuilds started this thread. He is free to say anything in it he wants.

You do not have to agree with him, but please do not go the childish route.
Do you really think you are breaking burks heart by not getting to meet you???
Sounds like a 5th grade threat to me.

Look in the mirror...who would really change the way they are just to meet you???

"If you insist on using THIS forum to promote a political or religious agenda.......well, then I guess it ain't gonna happen."

Easy, I'm not sure how you came up with my point of view about global warming being a political or religious agenda? My point was that the only people who seem to promote the Global warming myth do have a political or religious agenda, (or they just believe everything they are told by "experts") I don't, and so I don't buy their bullshit. I thought the articles I posted a link to might expose how Political the global warming theorists actually are, they don't seem to care about the truth, just about promoting their "myth" so they get all those millions in government funding for themselves and they are obviously willing to go to extremes to cover up opposing views and deny a platform for anyone that does not go along with them. If you are also of the mindset that believes no one should be allowed to express their viewpoint if it is different than your own, then I won't be very disappointed if we don't get to meet. My dad used to say, "I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it."

Hope you have a nice week :)

Just two things: I believe that political and religious "discussions" are strongly discouraged ON HERE....because they almost always end up in a fight and name calling. This is a perfect example. I have beliefs that are exactly the OPPOSITE of yours; exactly, precisely everything you said in the above post can also be said about those who do NOT believe in man's role in climate change......everything. In addition to that, the evidence is overwhelming that CO2 emissions ARE having an effect and those who don't believe all of the scientific evidence and opinions are VERY small and dwindling. The ones left, however, are becoming more vocal in the process. Repeating a lie over and over more times and louder doesn't make it any less of a lie.

And the second thing is: I respect your right to say anything you please (well, almost) but only in a venue where the rest of the people present are willing listeners. I believe that does NOT apply here in this forum and it certainly does not apply to me in person.

I'll ride with anybody......that doesn't have outlaw loud pipes and doesn't act like a squid......unless and until he/she starts preaching, whether I agree with his position or not.
Preaching to an unwilling audience is just RUDE......as is hi-jacking threads.

OK......have at it.

I believe that anyone who completely dismisses the human factor in global climate change and CO2 buildup is...........foolish. That's about the nicest word that I can come up with.
And I also believe that argueing with a fool just makes you BOTH look foolish ......so I quit.

In the future, I will try to pay closer attention to the forum label.......because I believe that a completely open forum like this does nothing for peace and harmony and often does exactly the opposite......as it tends to drive a wedge between people who might otherwise find it pleasurable to ride together.......or to at least discuss other subjects which are not likely to end up in a fight.

It is COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE.

Okay, well, I started this post by joking that I should have bought a jet ski to get around Atlanta with all the rain we have had lately, then somebody else brought up "global climate change", now who could that have been? Surely it wouldn't be someone who then later in the post attacked people who disagreed with them and said that other people shouldn't bring up political or religious subjects on this website now would it? Noooooo, couldn't be the same person, just couldn't be. I guess I'll have to go back and read it again and see who actually brought up the subject of climate change in this post, because it sure did piss off Easy Rider when they did that! Shame on them, bringing up a topic that would only tend to upset someone like Easy Rider!

Sorry Easy, but I just couldn't resist that one, but you set yourself up for it!

Mostly deserved. Maybe I need to put a "label" on my sarchasm (IJAFJ)....."It's Just a F'ing Joke".

While I was trying to subtley make a serious point, my reference to "wacco scientists" was made in jest.

If we are going to review the thread for blame, let's take note of who posted the first message with referrences to morons, crap, extremists and bull shit, OK ??

I fully understand that you have strong feelings on the subject; I just strongly feel that your conclusion is ......misguided.... and based on contrived "facts", warped opinions and most importantly, from people and organizations that stand to lose LOTS of money if it turns out to be true..........LOTS OF MONEY......lots and LOTS.

Historically, those who are defending their MONEY have not been encumbered by silly little things like the truth.

I just got back from school and it was really coming down tonight. The rain doesn't bother me that much, I slow down and wear good gear, what really annoys me is all the time it takes to get in and out of all the gear and then having to hang things up to dry before I can put it away.

LOL. The alternative is somebody hanging you up to dry. Yup, dressing up is a pain but at least you don't suffer bone chilling cold and rain with proper gear. *Note to self, time to clean and waterproof the boots.

That's a great point WW! The one thing I also need to do is to get something to waterproof my leather gloves. Any suggestions as to what works the best?

mrlmd1

Rubber or vinyl gloves over the top of them. Or get waterproof ski gloves.
What kind of raingear do you have?

Water Warrior 2

I have waterproof AlpineStar boots but my right foot got somewhat damp a while back so it is time for a spray-on treatment of some sort. Haven't tried it yet so there is no experience or recommendation to relate. As for keeping your gloves dry and consequently warm the big funny rubber gloves will work in a pinch. Used them on my first and wettest long distance ride. They are a bit clumsy and don't like to be clenched around a handgrip but they will get er done. They will cut the wind so a pair of winter gloves under them will work fairly well in the cold. Get the biggest size b/c you will probably need them and they will be more flexible too. Experience has taught me that a gauntlet is needed for warmth and dryness. You must keep the wrist covered and protected from the elements. My favorite gloves year round are Red Wing leather gauntlets with a layer of thinsulate. They are not armoured but are still far better than nothing in case of a slide. The comfort factor and quality is second to none also. The Vstrom is equiped with grip heaters and handguards so I have decent weather protection. I will be extending the handguards somewhat to keep my finger tips from cooling off and probably that will increase the effectiveness of the heated grips as a bonus. Something I have ordered, heated insoles(on back order of course)should just about cover my winter/cold gear. Yup, I am a wimp but I refuse to freeze. Riding when you are cold is not fun, not safe and just plain sucks. Extreme cold requires doors and a roof.
