Kinda new to the cycle scene, had the bike about 1.5 years and haven't had an issue... now suddenly...
:??:
Bike starts up fine in N... when I drop it to first (or even up to 2nd), the engine cuts... backfired pretty loud on 1 attempt. Fluids seem fine and I can see the clutch is pulling at the engine when I pull it. I might be missing something basic or I might have an issue... anyone have any advice? Thanks.

One question, are you talking about when you put it in gear and let out the clutch, or just the simple act of putting it in gear with the clutch still pulled in? If you are talking about with the clutch still pulled in, then it is going to be a safety switch problem, almost definitely the kickstand switch.

OR....have you unconsciously started putting it into gear with the sidestand down......and you weren't doing that before ???
Yes, it is likely something relatively simple.
