You tell me!
Please pardon me while I "jerk" a hijacked thead over here........maybe that will get me more votes!!
I just don't understand where all this hostility is coming from, and it's not particularly directed at me, and I'm not alone in sensing it. It's the way you guys talk.
I guess you REALLY don't understand it so I will TRY to explain it, hopefully without causing (too much) further hostility:
Just because you PERCEIVE it as hostility, doesn't mean that it is INTENDED to be hostile.
It's a guy thing. If you have never spent time on an amateur sports team or chugged a few beers in a "red neck" bar, then I guess you have no frame of reference. Guys bull-shit each other.......a LOT. Most women I know even understand that. Maybe prim and proper males don't or they have forgotten it along the way ??
Now, I am aware that in this current, femanized society, a lot of "guys" won't understand that......and it's OK.....but you don't have to get HOSTILE about it either. I think a member or two needs to have a Doctor extract that bug from their butt......and I'm not the only one sensing THAT either.
And one last point: An educated person (especially) should not be in the habit of saying "never" when he really means "almost never" or "rarely". Language and phrasing are important in conveying your ideas accurately.
And......just to cover all the bases, new users get what they dish out. If they charge in here like a bull in a china shop and take offense at the first thing that doesn't exactly match what they think they want..........they get REAL hostility, richly deserved. It is pretty easy to tell which people will be entertaining and which will be real disruptive assholes. Of course, sometimes that analysis takes a bit longer.
Going to WAR over an innocent comment accomplishes nothing useful.........well, except maybe for providing Patrick some entertainment. He can, I'm sure, entertain himself in other ways.

They should all be banned until they go for a 300 mile ride and take the time to chill a bit. That particular thread was very surprising as we rarely see that kind of hostility and bad language. Let's not lower our standards here.
Can I vote more than once????

ER - Do you honestly think that Patrick's large finger post to the newbie wasn't, and wasn't meant to be, hostile? Was there not even a slight bit of hostility in his post to me, "Stop telling me what to do", "I am not your bitch". That's only me PERCEIVING that that's hostile? There's no other kinder way to say anything like that?
Do you honestly believe that, first of all, you've NEVER said NEVER when you didn't REALLY mean NEVER EVER EVER. Or did you take poetic license and use a phrase like that even once or twice in your life? Are you going to pick on every word in everyone's posts, for "ACCURACY", when you know damn well what they meant?
And second of all, you NEVER wrote an offensive or hostile post, or NEVER INTENDED to write an hostile post? You are totally above EVER doing that? Don't blame the reader's perception that it's hostile all the time. You don't want to be spoken to that way, it's easy to see.
And don't give me "that it's a guy thing" crap. I've been there, done that, as much if not more than you. That's a cop-out. And if it wasn't for this guy thing, I wouldn't even be answering you or Patrick on here, I wouldn't waste so much of my time. I just happen to believe that people shouldn't get away with this type of behavior without being called on it. Both of you certainly don't like it when it's turned back on you and it shouldn't be directed by you towards others. It is,to some extent, even if you don't see it.
And this comment you made-
"It is pretty easy to tell which people will be entertaining and which will be real disruptive assholes. Of course, sometimes that analysis takes a bit longer."
Is that a general truth, sarcasm, directed at anyone in particular, or just sort of thrown out there to see what would happen? I plan to ignore it, disregard it, not take any offense to it, just realize that's you, although it could have a deeper meaning but it's not worth thinking about it.
On the other hand, if you say something that possibly could be perceived as offensive, you could qualify that with a little note that it's an attempt at humor, sarcasm, an innocent friendly jab or dig, etc,. and not instigate a war as you say over something YOU thought was innocent.
Now we can either shake and make up again and make an attempt to be cordial to each other sensitive to others here on this forum, or this can go on forever, or until one or more of us gets "Banned" from the site by you know how, popular vote or not.
And FYI, last time I looked, it's 9 or 10:1 so far on here for new VS. used helmets.
Enough of this shit. It's a beautiful day and I'm going out for a ride.

Do you honestly think that Patrick's large finger post to the newbie wasn't, and wasn't meant to be, hostile?
Hostility begets hostility. The n00b had made 5 posts, all of which were lazily begging for information that can and is easily found with the LEAST bit of searching here, looking in the manual, or checking the manufacturer's website...neither of which he did.
When people (especially stupid ones) come back at me in a hostile tone, my reaction is hostility because they have garnered absolutely NO RESPECT from me yet. You, on the other hand, had regained some in the previous hundred posts, but that quickly dissolved with your very trollish behavior. Keep it up in the other forums and you'll quickly find yourself the winner in this poll, with majority (the important few) rule. This place, like the Internet in general, is not as much a democracy, or even a representative republic. It is essentially a meritocracy based on the life of this board. My particular talent AND job here is to weed out the rif-raff and keep the board mostly in line, which I've been doing elsewhere for nearly 20 years and here for a while. Dupo can take that away if he wants or feels the need. I doubt he'll have a problem with how I've been dealing with it, though I can't speak for him specifically - he has his own voice. I also doubt HE'LL let the likes of YOU tell him what to do though. Knowing him, I'm actually a bit more lenient.

I was intent on staying out of this, but I think mrmld is getting a pretty raw deal. I think the new guy came on too strong about the Fram filters, too, but Patrick's response was an over-reaction, plain and simple. All mrmld is saying is to put the self-editor in play, especially online, where tone and all that is absent (sarcasm or teasing, for example, are obvious in person, but not online). That's it. Seems pretty self-evident to me, but he is really taking shit for it.
Moreover, when I read something like the above, I wonder if someday I'll be labeled "stupid" by the "important few". Now that is bullshit, right there. It's too bad; as a newbie myself, I feel a debt to the more experienced riders on here who offer their experience and knowledge freely. I truly appreciate it. But if those things are offered in that spirit, I'll find other experienced riders who genuinely want to promote riding - and who also remember that they were new at this once.
Just remember, everyone is an expert at something. What if you experienced riders were on a forum where you were trying to learn about investments or taxes, or something you are new at? Would you want the "important few" judging your intelligence and character because you posted something that later you might regret (tell me who has not done that)?
It' too bad. I really appreciate those who helped me out on this forum. But I'm not sure I want to stick around and be judged by the self-appointed oligarchy.

I've never said I was "self-appointed". I also never said this was an oligarchy, I said it is a meritocracy. Remember, Dupo pays the bills to give us the opportunity to piss each other off, and many of us volunteer time and money to help him out.

Very sorry , I guess I haven't figured out how to do my responses to your quotes any other way. I must be one on the "stupid ones".
---
So 5 posts lazily begging for information represents hostility to you? There's no big difference from you getting annoyed and getting hostile?
---
When people (especially stupid ones) come back at me in a hostile tone, my reaction is hostility because they have garnered absolutely NO RESPECT from me yet. :kneel:
Don't threaten me. If you want to ban me because you consider me "rif-raff" then go right ahead and make your day. I will still stand up and say what I believe to be true. If you don't like it, fine. You think I'm out of line for voicing an opinion or having some words back and forth with another member on here, (and I'm right (take another poll) ), and you don't want to hear it, especially when it's directed to you too for violating your own rules, then kick me off. I don't like to take any shit from anyone, neither do you, and I really don't like to see it dished out to anyone else either, like the noob. If that makes me rif-raff , then I'm proud of that. That just reinforces what I am talking about. You don't like anyone you think is telling you what to do, questioning you in any way, and your own rules don't apply to you, You'll never admit your reaction was a little excessive, but I hope your annoyance with daily life never turns into hostility like that.
Why don't you go back and view the posts and try and explain like what serious orders did you from me get that upset you so much? I doubt you would do anything anyone told you anyway. Your reaction again is over the top as it was to the noob. The discussion was inappropriately in the wrong thread I will admit, but the discussion itself was totally appropriate and if it offends your sensibilities, Oh I am so sorry for that.
So do what you want, "ban me", banish me into eternity, and in the last few days, you have basically lost all MY respect for YOU as an Admin on here for your holier-than-thou attitude and your underlying hostile behavior that you think is justified.

No, it wasn't.
You took an innocent comment, two short sentences, offered in good faith, with no malice........and turned it into a ranting WAR. And even now, you refuse to let go and won't even for a second consider the possibility that you might be totally off base here.
In effect, you are doing ALL the things you are accusing Partick of doing.........although admittedly not quite as bluntly........but just as agruementative, egotistical and demeaning, if not more so.

You really can't help but call people who are better at this than you, "holier-than-thou", can you?
My reaction wasn't the least bit excessive. The n00b's five posts asking for information was not hostility. The hostility was when he verbally admonished me for giving him more information than he wanted instead of saying "thanks, but no thanks", it was arm-waving and hysterically telling me he didn't "ask for an OPINION" on filters...as if he was going to get something different ON THE INTERNET.
PS. Are you really a doctor? Because there's a zit on this board's ass that we just can't seem to pop...you might be the only one that can help us out.

We need a review of events so far to put this in perspective, and then a little time out.
And then get back to work,
Patrick - Let's try and be gentle and analyze this a little.
If I go back to where you started and go back and look at the noob's post about the oil filter part #- there was one question he asked. Where are 5 posts? On other threads? After WW and MM answered him, you added "Do not use Fram oil filters ......period." Then he responded, and IMHO not in any kind of antagonistic fashion, that he didn't ask for an opinion on the quality of the filters, that he had used them for quite a while and was happy with them, he
thanked WW and MM for furnishing part numbers, and you got upset perceiving him dissing you and sent him the finger, which was hostile.
You wrote:

Did I miss something here? I didn't see or feel any admonishing. The problem with the written word is that the only sound that goes along with it is in the reader's head. What you READ may not have been what he SAID.
You, as the Admin, again IMHO should have been the better man if you thought he was so disrespectful, and said "Noob, you've mis-stepped, you've offended me for (whatever reason), I would prefer you not return to this site again, or if you want to stay, look it up for yourself once in a while", or something
like that. Not tell him to go fuck off, or fuck himself or whatever that picture means. Hostility breeds hostility according to you. That's and eye for an eye, an arm for an arm, or something like that I guess. What about turning the other cheek and being the better man, especially as an Admin? IMHO your response was a little excessive and unjustified and unprofessional.
And how come Easy didn't jump all over you for being so emphatic about not using Frams? Maybe because you didn't say the word "never"? Because you're not me?
And Easy, let's look at where we started - I made a statement "Never buy or trust a used helmet". You said above. "You took an innocent comment, two short sentences, offered in good faith, with no malice........and turned it into a ranting WAR." Are these the sentences you are referring to?
"While that might be good advice in general.........NEVER is a LONG time.
And suggesting that a specific individual who you do NOT know might be selling/giving away helmets that are ........tainted, is at the very least RUDE.
If you just couldn't resist the urge to convey that opinion, it could have been done in a private message."
Not wanting a war, I answered you with this- "Easy - let's not start again. That could have been a PM too."
Then it started when you came back with this-
"SIGH! Let's talk about bedside manner and common courtesy.
Talking about proper fit and poetntial hidden damage is all well and good.
Suggesting that they might be infested with cooties goes over the line, IMHO.......when you are actually talking to the person who is offering them up.
It is not so much what you said but HOW you said it.........and I am somewhat of an "expert" in making mistakes like that"
I guess you just couldn't resist and wanted too keep it going, knowing I would respond to that, putting out some bait and luring me in.
Easy- how come you didn't jump all over Alan for saying a used helmet has an ICK factor? Is ICK not as bad as crud? Is a helmet with ICK not TAINTED as one with crud is? Or didn't you see that post? And if you go back to the article on used helmets I posted there is a statement from a well respected manufacturer that sweat ruins helmets - it degrades the inner foam liner so it loses its' shock absorbing capacity. So, my statement was quite accurate, that a used helmet IS tainted, either with crud or ICK, which both include sweat.
I had offered out a hand in a sort of peace or truce again- "Now we can either shake and make up again and make an attempt to be cordial to each other and sensitive to others here on this forum, or this can go on forever, or until one or more of us gets "Banned" from the site by you know who, popular vote or not."
Besides the threat of banning, you may be chasing others away who don't want too hear this shit. On the other hand, our I'm sure readership has gone way way up in the past few days anxiously awaiting how this turns out.
You want the zit on the board's ass popped? All you have to do is bend over and ask, I'll be happy to lance it for you. (That's with a scalpel if you didn't know).:2tup:
It's time this ends, the battering back and forth, it should be buried but not forgotten, but before it does - anybody else on here have any comments about any of this? The thread had 220 views, anybody else have anything to contribute to the fray? Anything constructive to add? :)
Interesting reads. I'm too busy packing and planning for an 11 day, 1,000 mile drive and vacation to Disney World on Thursday to give a crap :) Otherwise, i'd definetly have an opinion!
See you all on the 27th.
