hey guys, please allow me to introduce myself before i go picking at your brains. my name is jason and i reside in las vegas nevada where i am curently employed with sprint. I have a 1999 gz250 that was bought from a ailing friend who recently passed. need-less to say, this bike now means alot to me.
Now to the point, i was cruising down the highway at about 75mph when i hear a loud band coming from somewhere between my crotch, i figure "aww crap!!!". i slowly merge over to the right hand side of the freeway to find that i had blown my clutch cover and probably took out my clutch at the same time. so my question is this, i found a clutch and clutch cover on ebay but they came off a 2002 gz250. will the clutch and the clutch cover of a 2002 fit on my 1999? any help or suggestions to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. i will post pictures of my actual cover tonight when i get off of work. THANKS GUYS!

Welcome. Too bad that you come here under such bad circumstances......but it seems a lot of people do.

First, one doesn't "blow" a clutch cover because there isn't that much sustained pressure inside the crankcase...........unless something inside went off like a hand grenade........maybe the clutch but probably something else.

You REALLY need to figure out what caused the failure in the first place before you can determine what needs to be fixed. Once the cover came off, you might have lost enough oil that the rod and crank bearings are now shot, requiring a complete engine rebuild.

OTOH, the cover itself might have failed due to metal fatigue or loose bolts or both. If that is the case, you might be able to slap on a new cover, fill up the oil and go off riding.

This is, no doubt, to complex a problem for you to get any good advice by remote control. Someone who has seen the inside of a GZ engine before is probably going to have to look at it.

You first need a good diagnosis (not a wild guess) before you know what medicine to apply.

Good luck!

I definitely suggest taking it to a shop.

When stuff blows up just below your crotch, expert care is usually recommended.

Seriously, though, you don't know what else is torn up in there without an expert eye, or a complete tear down.
