End of Riding Season

Bah Humbug. Today appears to be the end of the riding season here. The weather has been crappy here for a while with only a very few riding days in the past few weeks which I missed entirely. Yesterday I spent the day waiting for an elecrician to show up to fix an overhead light in the kichen( no show ). Day before babysat the phone at home in case a pregnant lady needed a ride to the hospital. Last week babysat the phone on the only good day. Week before with one good day and got tied up with other stuff. Woke up today to snow and falling temps beyond what is normal in this neck of the woods. Oh well, at least I have a warm cage.

Yep my riding season is over too. I just purchased a gently used, very well made/durable cover for the bike the other day. Its been constantly cold here and we've been getting snow showers on and off. I'm officially done for the season. This sucks.

Looking forward to March/April/May !!

Dupo - Instead of putting your bike to sleep for the winter, you could send it down here. It would stay nice and warm in Florida and would like the little tree-lined country roads as well as I-10. You could get it back (maybe) in March/April/May.

Hey Dupo, I'm still riding every day! No big deal either. But when there is ice on the road I'm not taking the Geezer anymore. This morning on my way to work I tried riding across an icy patch on a back road, going pretty slow, and went down. Because it was downhill, I slid til the ice ran out, about 50 feet. I was wearing my insulated, armored suit of course, 'cause it was 26 degrees when I left the house, so no damage to me at all. And since it was sheet ice it was smooth sliding, so no damage to the bike either. But in short, Bikes and Ice-not a good combination!

Like last winter, I try to use it at least once every two to three weeks to avoid having to winterize it.

So far, so good. Yesterday (Sunday) the weather was really nice so I took it out for a spin, for the first time since Thanksgiving. I just imagine that it appreciates being used and not left alone for months on end. Especially when you give it a little TLC, this time it was a few drips of oil on the chain. And an oil level check.

It started right away and I let it warm up a bit. When leaving our street, I was reminded of one of the benefits of riding a bike, attention from females, as one of my neighbors' daughters just gave me this smile and a friendly wave that I would have never gotten when driving a cage ! :)

Down the road it went, into the low sun and along several of the hilly and windy backroads :rawk:

I stopped to check out some illegal logging activity along a creek, freshly chewed tree stumps, five or six trees felled, that's special for a Dutchman like me, you should know that the last beaver in The Netherlands was killed in 1825, that is before most of our forum members were born. The mass extinction of the Dutch beavers in the early 19th century was a direct result of the Catholic church declaring beavers to be "fish". :whistle: Catholics are not allowed to eat meat on Fridays, and fish is not a meat as defined by Rome, therefore the Catholics eat fish on Fridays. They must have preferred the warm blooded furry fish with legs and lungs. O_o

I made a picture of my bike in the leafless woods however I didn't realize I had the camera set to 'macro' so all pics look like through fogged up glasses... :cry:

On the way home I noticed that my turn signal indicator light had died as well (the 'neutral' light went a few months ago) so now I R-e-a-l-l-y want to replace them by white LEDs, I'll try to do that this winter and make a 'how-to' of it. It will involve cracking the old bulb, soldering a resistor, a couple diodes and the LED to the wires and another, mixing up some plastic, and that should give you a nice long-life replacement light bulb.

We had a sleet and icy snow storm yesterday afternoon, not unexpected, and the roads got very slippery. I had driven the ranger to work and I wasn't stuck there. Now I'm thinking about studded tires for the Geezer...I know, I'm nuts... but maybe...

Yea for once they were RIGHT about us getting snow. I am so used to them being wrong, i drove out in that last night figuring we'd get rain like usual when they predict snow. Boy the mustang wasn't happy driving home last night.

Forget the Geezer and stick with the Ranger. You will suffer less road rash.

Something's going on down here right now, nothing to complain about though. It's been in the high 70's all this week in the panhandle of Florida, to hit 80 today. Got my side-zip leather overpants I ordered a few weeks ago when it was 55-60, but can't try them out 'cause it's too hot. Also had to switch to my lighter jacket. Like I said, nothing to complain about. C'mon down. No snow.
I remember the old days in NJ, when I had to get a Hummer (H1-Desert Storm type) in '95 because of the 2-3' of snow every few days for 4 months that winter, and snowblowing off the driveway every night only to get blocked in by the town snowplow cleaning off the streets in the middle of the night. Much better down here.

Yes, we are in for a long, snowy and icy winter here in Illinois. Supposed to have a 1/4" to 1/2" of ice today and tomorrow. Sure hope the power doesn't go out!
