View Full Version : How much "play" do you have when your seat is locked?

I purchased a used 2001 gz. When the seat is locked, it can still jiggle around just a bit... more like up & down in the front. Not so much side to side. Is that normal? How can I double check ? If I pull the latch cable, how much of the "clip" should slip under the lever?

Thanks. Don't want to fly off the thing!!!!

quarter inch or so. Maybe less.

There should be virtually NO play in the actual latch mechanism but......the rest of the seat mounting points are made to flex a bit. Turn it over and look at the contact points; rubber bumper on each side that hits the lip on the storage well and the front lip which won't come UP but will go DOWN. If you still have it, the big rubber square in the middle is just to keep the tool pouch from rattling !!

Sounds to me like yours is about normal.

P.S. Please put your location in your profile. Thanks.

Mine has none at all, but it's a 2008 and I've only taken the seat off maybe 5 times.

It is possible greenhorn is missing a rubber bumper from the bottom of the seat. Maybe some one could post a pic of their seat with the bumpers in place.

Same deal here.

Mine is a 2002, and the seat is a VERY tight fit - no play that I can feel.

Are you sure that the seat is locked in? The first time I took my seat off, I put it back on and thought it was weird because it was moving a bit. I realized that you have to use the key to lock it back into place. It tends to be hard to do on my bike, and if I take the seat off, it takes several tries to get it back on snugly.

Of course, I could be the only one who was silly enough as to not think that it would need the key to get back into place when it needed the key to get out of place!

Mine doesn't need the key to lock back down. You might puff some graphite powder on the lock mechanism (where the seat grabs), in fact it's probably a good idea to put it in the lock cylinder and ignition key holes too.

Well, actually you don't. If you put a drop or two of oil in the little slide bar that actually does the locking.....put the seat in the proper position......and then push down on the back firmly, or give it a good thump, it should snap into the locked position. :rawk:

Afterthought: If it doesn't work that way, you may have a missing spring or a sticky lock mechanism.

On mine you just put the seat in place then push down firmly on the back on the seat and it snaps right in. No key necessary. If yours doesn't go right in, try Easy Rider's suggestion and lube it up.

My seat has no play in it at all. It also will lock down into place without the key. My bike is a 2005.
