changing out hand grips???

Is it possible to change out grips and how would this be done? My bike had been dropped by previous owner and trying to figure out if I can fix it. Any help is welcome. Thanks Dusty :2tup:

Is it just the bar ends that are damaged?

Just loosen the screw. Dont remove it all the way or you'll loose the nut in the handle bar. Spray inside the gap behind the exposed weight part inside the handlebar with WD-40 to lubricate the rubber insert, then just work the whole bar end assembly out of the bar. You'll then be able the to see how it works. You should be able to go to the hardware store and get a replacement metric screw for the one that is bent.

Replace the screw, reassemble the bar end, and reinsert. Tighten up and you're done.

A bent bar end could make your throttle stick so you probably should fix this ASAP.

Okay, I figure I'll piggyback on this existing thread rather than starting a new one:

I'm planning on getting some new grips some time in the really near future and I have a couple of questions.

First: when you get new grips, do they typically fit completely over the throttle sleeve? I'm asking this because there's that lip type thing on the sleeve that the stock grips fit over, but I don't know if any aftermarket ones will fit the same way. Here's a picture to illustrate what I'm talking about:

See right next to the kill switch, where the grip is pulled back to expose the lip? That's what I'm talking about. I'd really prefer not to buy a new throttle sleeve and all that, so it'd be nice if the new grip just slipped right over the existing one. Also, I've read a few accounts of people who have changed their grips and started to experience vibrations in the handlebars: does anybody know of any fairly cheap aftermarket grips that leave the ends open so you can use the existing bar ends?

I'm thinking about trying to find some that have a much larger outside diameter than the stock ones, as well as having a little chrome and looking more like a "cruiser" grip rather than the "dirt-bike" style that comes stock. I shopped around at the stores in my area, and I couldn't find any cool ones that fit on 7/8" bars, so I'll probably have to order off the internet and that's usually a crapshoot, so any feedback will be much appreciated.

The ISO grips I bought are from Kuryakyn http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=2925 and fit over the throttle sleeve. It's a very easy installation with the included glue. I really like mine as they are much larger in diameter than the stock grips. You do have to ditch the bar end weights, but I've not experienced any vibration problems at all as the grips have a big rubber surface and are alot heavier than the stock ones. Be sure to order for 7/8" bars.

I've mentioned this before but maybe this would be a good place for a repeat.

If you can bear to dismiss the bling factor, the a slip-on foam grip will, I think, fill the rest of your needs.
Very inexpensive. Gives a fatter, softer grip and installs in minutes without tools or glue.
Just need to determine the diameter of the stock grips and get slip-ons of that size.
They go on OVER the stock grips.

I finally found a replacement bolt the metric 5 inches was a challenge to find but finally got it put back together. Thanks Again to Sarris :tup:
